African Giant in Shackles: A Nation Crushed by Poverty, Corruption, and Injustice

Blind Loyalty and the Misuse of Conscience

People who make excuses for the current government should be quiet and reflect on their conscience for once. They should use their brains to think critically—especially political supporters, hooligans, thugs, and ethnic or tribal bigots who blindly support their leaders regardless of wrongdoing. They shouldn’t misuse their intelligence just because they benefit from the crumbs thrown by the treasury looters ruling the country.

The poverty rate in the country is alarming, affecting most people, including those who continue to support the looters. The ruling political party has been in power for 10 years, yet its supporters still claim that the president has only been in office for two years. A party's governance is not just about one individual—it is about continuity. If they haven’t accomplished anything in a decade, they do not deserve to be re-elected in 2027.
To put this into perspective, a child who was born 10 years ago would now be in primary 5 or 6, depending on when they started school. If the government cannot set the country on the right track in 5 or 6 years—despite having the opportunity to correct past mistakes—it is clear that they are either unprepared to govern or simply incompetent. They should focus on real governance and expect criticism, as people have been waiting for the change they promised for the past nine years. Their campaign assured transformation within five years, yet here we are, a decade later, still hearing excuses. Do they expect citizens to wait another 20 years while they continue to enjoy the benefits of power, while those they govern live in misery?

Nigeria is blessed with mineral resources (e.g., oil), that could propel it toward prosperity, much like Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, or Saudi Arabia —not to mention Western nations such as the US, France, the UK, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. Yet, Nigerian politicians keep telling citizens to be patient while they themselves are not. The moment they lose power or fail to secure a ministerial position, they start jumping from one party to another—deceiving their ignorant followers. Even those elected in opposition parties frequently switch to the ruling party just to remain relevant. This is why I always say that most political parties in Nigeria are the same. Their interests are not about the people but about self-enrichment and looting the treasury. They are unwilling to be a true opposition, as their main concern is securing huge salaries and allowances while preaching patience they themselves cannot endure.

A Nation Drowning in Poverty and Desperation: Unemployment and the Collapse of Small Businesses

The poverty rate in the country is alarming, with a lack of employment opportunities and the collapse of small businesses pushing many into depression and even the grave. Many young girls who should be in school have been forced into prostitution—now rebranded as "hook-up"— while some housewives have also joined the trade just to feed their children or families. Meanwhile, many young boys/men have turned to online fraud, known as "Yahoo" or "Yahoo Plus," as a means of survival. Even religious leaders have resorted to rituals, turning places of worship into dens for ritualists. Some activists who once fought against corruption are now joining the looters, embracing the slogan, “If you can’t beat them, join them.”

Selective Outrage – When Injustice Hits Home

The sad reality is that most people only acknowledge how bad the country is when tragedy strikes them or their family. When they are kidnapped, scammed, extorted, or a powerful leader abuses them, only then do they suddenly find the courage to speak against injustice. Until then, they remain silent or defend the very system that oppresses them.

The Rich Flourish While the Poor Beg for Survival

In the comment sections of celebrities and politicians, people can be seen begging for as little as 2,000 Naira just to feed their families. Instead of addressing these issues, celebrities and politicians flaunt their wealth to oppress the masses—many of whom are unaware that some of these celebrities are involved in money laundering for corrupt politicians—treasury looters. Meanwhile, the law, particularly the EFCC (symbolised by the eagle logo), seems to exist only to go after the poor, while the real looters walk free.

Brain Drain and the Desperation to Escape

Those unwilling to engage in fraud, prostitution, or ritual practices are left with no choice but to sell their/family properties and migrate abroad in search of greener pastures, leading to a massive brain drain. All of this is plunging the country deeper into poverty, turning it into a poverty zone while its so-called leaders continue to exploit the people.

A Call for Reform and Accountability: Time for Real Change

It is time to rewrite the country’s constitution and reduce/eliminate unnecessary government spending—especially on politicians who contribute nothing meaningful, for example in the Senate, dozing off during sessions while nodding along to whatever is being said to support (majority) injustice and cash out at end of the month. Until the people wake up and demand real accountability, the cycle of corruption, poverty, and oppression will continue.
