Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu did not mince her words when she said Nigerian religious leaders are worse than their political counterparts.
The remark was made to criticize a post by Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, in which he urged Christians not to despise those people in government.
Kumuyi advised against the destruction of private and public property as a response to politicians failing to deliver on promises said during the election campaign.
“We teach that if you’re a genuine believer in [Jesus] Christ, you wouldn’t hate your neighbour. Nor would you disdain those in power because they appear not to be delivering on electoral pledges such that you would go on the rampage, destroying government property or pillaging the public till,” wrote the clergyman.
In turn, Yesufu, who was one of the key figures in the destructive #EndSARS protests in October 2020, criticized religious leaders for their role in the country’s overall situation.
“Religious rulers in Nigeria are worse than political rulers,” Yesufu wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “They keep the people enslaved. They also need bad governance to sell cheap miracles and power points!”
“Until you free people from the clutches of their mallams, pastors, dibias, babalawos & boka, nothing will change.”
